Step 3: Prepare the Fabric and Hem Tape
-
Plug in and preheat your iron to a medium temperature (check your trouser fabric care label).
-
Lightly press the bottom of each trouser leg to remove wrinkles.
-
Take the hem tape strip supplied with your kaftan and cut it to fit around the inside of each trouser leg (slightly shorter than the full circumference).
-
Make sure the tape lies flat with no twists.

Step 4: Fold the Hem and Place the Tape
-
With trousers still inside out, unfold the bottom edge where you pinned or marked.
-
Lay the hem tape along the inside of the trouser leg, just above the raw edge, all the way around.
-
Fold the fabric back up along your hem line so the tape is sandwiched between two layers of fabric.
-
Smooth the folded hem with your fingers to remove any bumps or wrinkles.
Important: The hem tape should be completely covered by fabric – do not let it touch the iron directly.
(Image suggestion: Cross-section style: outer fabric, folded hem, hem tape strip in between.)
Step 5: Fuse the Hem with the Iron
-
Place the trouser leg flat on the ironing board with the folded hem facing up.
-
Lay a pressing cloth (or thin cotton cloth) over the hem to protect the fabric.
-
Press the iron down firmly on one section of the hem for around 10–15 seconds – do not slide the iron around.
-
Lift the iron, move to the next section, and repeat until you’ve gone all the way around the leg.
-
Check that you have pressed every part of the hem where the tape is.

Step 6: Let It Cool and Check the Bond
-
Leave the trousers lying flat and allow the hem to cool completely.
-
Once cool, gently tug on the hem from the inside. It should feel firmly bonded and not peel away.
-
If you find a loose spot, cover with the pressing cloth and press again for a few more seconds.
-
Repeat Steps 4–6 on the other trouser leg, making sure the lengths match.
(Image suggestion: Hand gently lifting the edge of the hem to test it, with a “cool down” icon.)
Step 7: Care & Washing Instructions
To help your new hem last as long as possible:
-
Follow the care label on your kaftan.
-
Wash inside-out where possible.
-
Use gentle cycles and avoid very high temperatures.
-
Avoid very hot tumble drying – moderate or low heat is best.
-
Do not pull or stretch the hem area while it’s warm from the wash or dryer.

Step 8: How to Adjust or Remove the Hem Later
If you want to change the length or remove the hem tape:
-
Turn the trousers inside out.
-
Place a pressing cloth over the hem.
-
Use a warm iron to re-heat a small section of the hem, softening the adhesive.
-
While the fabric is warm (not hot), gently peel the folded hem open.
-
Remove any remaining adhesive by brushing or picking it away carefully; then press the fabric flat.
-
Re-hem at a new length using a fresh piece of tape, or take it to a tailor if you prefer a sewn hem.

Tips for Best Results
-
Work on a clean, flat surface with good light.
-
Always test the iron heat on a small hidden area first.
-
For very delicate or very stretchy fabrics, consider a professional alteration.
-
Take your time on the first leg so you can copy it exactly on the second.
FAQ
Q: Is the hem tape permanent?
The hem tape creates a strong, long-lasting hold for everyday wear and washing, but it can be removed by reheating and gently peeling the hem open. It’s secure enough for regular use but not as permanent as a stitched hem.
Q: Will the hem tape damage my trousers?
Used correctly (with a pressing cloth and the right iron temperature), hem tape is gentle on most fabrics and should not damage your trousers. Always test on a hidden area first if you’re unsure.
Q: Can I wash my trousers after using hem tape?
Yes. Follow the washing instructions on your kaftan care label. Gentle washing and moderate temperatures will help your hem last longer.
Q: What fabrics does this work best on?
Hem tape works best on light to medium-weight fabrics like cotton, viscose, polyester and blends. Very slippery or very delicate fabrics (like some silks) may not bond as well – for these, a tailor-sewn hem may be better.
Q: What if the hem comes loose in one area?
No problem. Turn the trousers inside out, place a pressing cloth on the loose section and press again with the iron for a few seconds to re-activate the adhesive. Let it cool before wearing.
Q: Can I still get the trousers professionally shortened later?
Yes. The hem tape can be removed by reheating and peeling the hem open. Once removed, a tailor can press and sew a new hem at your preferred length.
Q: Do I need any sewing skills to do this?
No – this is a completely no-sew method. If you can use an iron and measure a straight line, you can shorten your trousers at home.
